I've filmed another video for my YouTube channel. This time I'm demonstrating wobble cushions and twisting discs. These are both sensory equipment items that can help some children feel happier and more regulated when sat in class or at the dinner table or doing homework etc.

In the video I explain how to use them but I also discuss why sensory equipment isn't always a good idea. I talk about the importance of understanding what is going on for the child under the surface before rushing to use sensory equipment and also whether movement can be more naturally incorporated into the day. In my Move Regulate Learn training for schools, I always emphasise the importance of adult connection and co-regulation and how that is far more important and effective than any piece of sensory equipment. I also talk about the importance of not using sensory equipment to make a child feel better only to send them back into the environment that made them feel dysregulated or anxious in the first place - we need to start by making sure the environment and level of task demand etc is appropriate for the child and then we can look at equipment if needed - sensory equipment should usually be the last step.

For some children however, these items can be really helpful and they are worth considering. You can view the video here. You can buy a wobble cushion here and a twisting disc here. Hope this is helpful.
